How does AI know what colors to use in a black and white photo?

AI colorization uses a combination of object recognition, material classification, and statistical learning from millions of color photographs. The model identifies what objects are in the scene (grass, faces, clothing, sky, wood), then applies learned probability distributions for what color those objects most commonly are. For objects with known historical constraints — specific uniforms, model years of vehicles, architectural periods — the model incorporates those constraints. The result is not a single "correct" answer but the most historically and visually plausible reconstruction.

What era of photos does AI colorization work best on?

1920s through 1980s photographs colorize particularly well — the period has extensive color reference material for training. Earlier daguerreotypes and tintypes (pre-1900) present more challenges due to different tonal rendering in the original medium. Contemporary black-and-white film (deliberate artistic choice) also colorizes well since scene content remains similar to the color-photograph era.

Can I colorize a group photo where people are wearing different clothes?

Yes. The model applies per-region analysis, not global color mapping. Each person in the frame, each garment, each background element is classified independently and assigned its own color logic. A group photo at a 1950s family gathering will see the green lawn treated differently from the floral dresses, which are treated differently from the gray suits, which are treated differently from the wooden farmhouse behind them.

Why do my colorized photos sometimes look slightly desaturated compared to modern photos?

This is intentional and historically accurate. Color films of the mid-twentieth century had characteristic saturation profiles — they were not the highly saturated images we associate with modern digital cameras and smartphone HDR processing. Pinin's model calibrates saturation to match the likely capture era. A 1955 Kodachrome slide gets 1955 Kodachrome saturation — warm, natural, and slightly restrained compared to modern expectations.

Can I colorize a photo of a photo taken with my phone?

Yes, but with lower quality results than a flatbed scan. Phone photos of prints introduce moiré patterns from the printed halftone dots, glare from curved or textured surfaces, and significantly less effective resolution than a flatbed scan. If the original print is available, a 600 DPI flatbed scan will always produce a better colorization than a phone photograph of the same print.
