My photos are so faded they look almost black and white. Can AI still restore the color?
Significant restoration is often still possible even when photos appear nearly monochrome. Very small amounts of remaining color information — below what the eye perceives as color — can still be detected in a high-resolution scan. The AI amplifies and reconstructs from this residual signal. That said, if a print has faded completely to black and white with zero measurable color information remaining, the AI treats it as a black-and-white image — colorization (a separate process) would then be the appropriate next step.
My parents' wedding photos from 1975 have an orange cast. What causes this?
This is one of the most common fading signatures from that era. Kodacolor negative film and the printing papers used in the 1970s had unstable cyan dye layers that faded significantly faster than red and yellow. As cyan depletes, the remaining dyes create a warm, orange-yellow cast. Additionally, the optical brightening agents in the paper base yellowed over time, adding a paper-yellow component on top of the dye shift. How do I prevent my restored photos from fading again?
Digital files do not fade — once the image is restored and saved digitally, the restoration is permanent. Store the digital file in at least three locations: a local hard drive, an external backup, and a cloud service. For physical prints made from the restored digital file, use archival pigment inks (not dye-based) and acid-free paper. Display copies under UV-filtered glass or acrylic, away from direct sunlight and fluorescent lighting. The original physical print should also be stored in an acid-free box in a cool, dry environment.
Can AI restore faded slides and negatives, or only prints?
AI restoration works on any digitized image. Slides and negatives that have been scanned (using a slide/negative scanner or a scanner with a transparency adapter) can be restored in exactly the same way as prints. Slides often fade differently from prints — Kodachrome slides from the 1960s–70s are notoriously stable, while some Ektachrome formulations from the same period suffer dramatic magenta shift. Manual color correction in Photoshop requires the user to know what the original colors should look like — which requires either memory of the original scene or reference photos from the same session.
