The quality of an AI photo restoration is fundamentally bounded by the quality of the digital file you upload. A restoration algorithm cannot recover detail that was not captured in the scan. A 300 DPI scan of a 4×6 print contains approximately 360,000 pixels — enough to see the image clearly on a screen, but insufficient for the AI to reconstruct fine facial features, fabric textures, or subtle damage patterns. The same print scanned at 600 DPI contains 1,440,000 pixels — four times more data for the AI to work with, producing significantly better restoration results. This matters especially for damaged photos. A scratch across a face needs surrounding texture data for the inpainting algorithm to synthesize a convincing repair. That texture exists in the original print but may not survive low-resolution digitization. Water damage tide lines that appear as uniform discoloration at 300 DPI reveal complex dye migration patterns at 600 DPI — patterns the AI uses to correctly reconstruct the original color. Faded images show residual color information below the threshold of visibility at low resolution that becomes usable signal at higher resolution. Scanning is the step most people do once and rarely revisit. Do it right the first time: the original physical prints will continue to degrade, and a high-quality scan is the permanent record. How to digitize old photos correctly: 3-step method
Choose the right scanner and prepare your workspace
Use a flatbed scanner with a glass platen. Recommended models: Epson Perfection V39, V600, or V800 (for negatives and slides). Clean the scanner glass with a microfiber cloth before each session — a single dust particle creates a streak across dozens of scans. Work in a room without direct sunlight. Handle prints by edges only; skin oils accelerate chemical degradation.
Set correct scan parameters
Resolution: 600 DPI for standard 3×5 and 4×6 prints. 1200 DPI for wallet-sized prints or any image smaller than 3 inches on its shortest side. 2400–4000 DPI for 35mm negatives and slides. Color mode: 24-bit RGB color for all photos, including black-and-white prints (the grayscale gradations in B&W prints contain useful tonal data that color scanning captures). File format: TIFF (lossless) for archives. Disable all scanner auto-corrections — scan the raw image.
Organize, name, and back up immediately
Create a folder structure before scanning: Year > Month or Event. Name files with date and subject: 1967_08_Grandparents_Wedding_001.tif. The naming system should work for someone who has never seen the photos. Immediately after each session: copy to an external hard drive and upload to cloud storage. The 3-2-1 rule: 3 copies, 2 different media types, 1 off-site. Do not close the scanner until the backup is confirmed.

What resolution (DPI) should I use to scan old photos for restoration?
600 DPI is the minimum for effective AI restoration of standard-sized prints (3×5, 4×6, 5×7). At 600 DPI, a 4×6 print becomes 2400×3600 pixels — sufficient for the AI to work with fine detail. For wallet-sized prints (roughly 2×3 inches), scan at 1200 DPI to achieve similar effective pixel counts. For 35mm negatives, 2400–4000 DPI is appropriate. Going beyond 1200 DPI on larger prints produces diminishing returns — the grain in the photographic emulsion becomes the resolution limit long before the scanner does.
Should I save scans as TIFF or JPEG?
TIFF for the archive; JPEG only for working copies or sharing. TIFF is lossless — every pixel is saved exactly as captured. JPEG uses lossy compression that discards information the algorithm judges as imperceptible, but those imperceptible differences include the subtle tonal gradations in faded areas that AI restoration relies on for color reconstruction. A 4×6 print scanned at 600 DPI as TIFF is approximately 25–40MB. As maximum-quality JPEG it is 3–8MB. The size difference is not worth the quality loss for archival purposes.
Can I use my phone instead of a scanner?
Only as a last resort. Phone cameras introduce several problems that flatbed scanners avoid: lens distortion that bends straight edges, keystoning if the camera is not perfectly parallel to the print, moiré patterns from the interaction between the camera sensor and halftone dot patterns in the print, and glare from any surface reflectivity. Google PhotoScan and Microsoft Lens reduce glare through multiple exposures but cannot fully compensate for the other issues. For irreplaceable photos, invest 30 minutes renting or borrowing a flatbed scanner rather than spending that time with a phone.
I have hundreds of photos. Should I hire a service to scan them?
Professional scanning services (ScanMyPhotos, Legacybox, ScanCafe, Costco Photo Scanning) are legitimate for large batches — they typically scan at 600 DPI and save as JPEG. Before choosing a service, ask: what resolution do they scan at, do they return originals, what is their privacy policy for uploaded family photos, and what format are the returned files. The tradeoff is cost and time vs. the quality ceiling of their batch process. For especially valuable or fragile originals, self-scanning with careful handling gives you direct control over quality and handling.
My photos are stuck together in an album. How do I scan them?
Photos stuck to magnetic album pages (the type with static-cling or adhesive-coated pages from the 1980s) are one of the most common scanning challenges. Do not pull. Use the following approach: cut the album page around the photo (leaving a border), then scan the photo-on-page as a unit. If you need to remove the photo, test humidification in a sealed container with a slightly damp (not wet) sponge for 24 hours. Most prints will release without damage. For photos glued to cardboard backing, they may be permanent — scan as-is. Never use heat or solvents.
