Match the file to the print size

Decide what you are printing — a 4×6 gift, an 8×10 frame, a 16×20 wall piece — then check your image dimensions against the table above. Print vs screen: why the file should differ

A photo tuned for a phone screen is rarely tuned for paper. Screens glow, paper absorbs light; a file that looks perfectly bright on a display can print dark and muddy. The practical fix:

  • • Boost contrast slightly for print — it compensates for paper’s lower range
  • • Keep the sharpening subtle — over-sharpened files print with harsh edges
  • • If ordering online, most labs offer a preview; trust it, then adjust and reorder once
  • • For large prints, ask the lab about color profiles (sRGB is the safe default)
